UsTrendy Trendsetters of the Week: Olivia Watson

UsTrendy has officially fallen head-over-pretty-heels in love- with Olivia Watson, that is. The Livvyland.com blogger is not only a trendsetter, but is wise beyond her years and completely humble, despite her obvious success and growing popularity as a style genius. The down-to-earth, Austin-native is a well-rounded woman-she has managed to travel the world, has created an impressive fashion background, and works in the tech industry  while constantly building her amazing personal brand. Olivia is relatable though; she accomplished these feats while wisely admitting she “started small, but dreamt big.” This unbelievably cool-yet-smart advice is the one thing that is able to turn a blogger into a mentor and inspiration to countless girls, hence why we adore her. Olivia, we’re sure we speak for every gal when we ask, “can we be you?” Check out why we have a girl-crush on Olivia with our interview below!

-What inspired you to start your blog and social media accounts?

My previous job was co-running the social media accounts and fashion blog for Kendra Scott Jewelry, so after being on the brand side of things and learning about the fashion blogger world, I felt compelled to start one of my own! I love fashion and feel that it’s such a unique and fun way to express yourself – LivvyLand has definitely become an amazing creative outlet for me, not only from a styling aspect, but the overall branding and aesthetic has been so great to see come together over time. It’s my little ever-evolving corner of the Internet!

-What’s your biggest tip for someone who wants to get into fashion industry?

Start small and dream big. I got into the fashion industry by working at Nordstrom as a sales associate after graduating college (gotta love a degree in journalism!), which led me to meet the Kendra Scott team (they hosted a trunk show), which then led me to start LivvyLand. It was a whirlwind but I believed in myself along the way and continued to grow both personally and professionally. My advice: be optimistic, learn and soak in the little things (they may end up being big things later on…like learning Photoshop in my case!), don’t lose sight of your dreams, and work really hard. Oh, and be kind – above all! You never know who you’ll meet today that can help you 10 years down the road. Kindness goes a long way.

-How would you describe your own personal style?

I’d like to think of my style as down-to-earth, wearable, casual, yet feminine with pops of color here and there – a lot like Austin, which has a very low-key, approachable vibe. A friend once described my style as “classy hipster” …ha! I kind of think he was spot on! I love a dash of grit, but a lot of the time what I’m thinking as I pick out my outfit is, “would you go see your mom in this?” I like a good balance between cool and girly.

-What are some of your current fashion obsessions?

Oh goodness, tough decision! Let’s see, I am definitely on the fruit print bandwagon. I just picked up a pair of Keds that have orange fruit patterns all over them – they’re adorable! I also love shift dresses at the moment. For one, it’s so hot in Texas that an airy dress is amazing. And two, who doesn’t love to look cute and be able to clean their plate at dinner? 😉

-What is one thing that people would be surprised to hear?

I’ll give you two…is that okay? 1. I have a full time job outside of my blog working for an incredible tech company here in Austin – and I love it! Thus, I attend my normal workweek and work on LivvyLand at all other hours of the day to keep up! 2. I’m engaged to my high school sweetheart, Blake. We dated as teens, then took a five-year hiatus, and recently got engaged in May. In a nutshell, I’ve been in love with him since I was 17…so, I am over-the-moon happy right now!

-Is there someone out there who inspires you fashion-wise?

So many to choose from, but I’d say fashion blogger Sincerely Jules is incredible and such an inspiration. She is so effortlessly chic yet casual with every look. Jessica Alba is another style icon who just gets it right every time. I’ve definitely taken some tips from observing their styles, then added my own “Livvy-ish” components

-What trend do you hope stays around forever or makes a comeback?

I would LOVE for Birkenstocks to stay on trend in the fashion world forever. Luckily, Austin is such a hippie city that Birkenstocks will always be appropriate here, but I feel like their cool factor reached new heights over the past couple of years in the fashion scene…and I am so happy it did! (And my feet sure are, too!).

-Where do you like to travel?

My mom is a flight attendant, so I grew up traveling all over the place. In the U.S., my favorite cities to travel to are San Diego and Chicago. I know they’re polar opposites – beach vs. city, but they’re both equally lovely in different ways. Outside the country, Paris has been my absolute favorite. It really is unbelievably romantic; it’s not just that way in the movies! The history, the wine, the fashion…it’s truly unique.

-What is the one thing you couldn’t live without?

My family, hands down. I talk to my mom and sister each about 3-4 times a day and see my siblings (I have 4 older siblings and 5 nieces and nephews) and their families as often as I can. Everyone lives in Austin and with so many people, there’s pretty much a birthday to celebrate every other week – ha! Thus, we see each other all the time, it’s so much fun!
