What motivated you to start this type of business?
I had been working at a salon for a little over two years, and while I loved the management side of things, I knew that wasn’t enough. I really wanted to develop more of a personal relationship with clients. I love the beauty/fitness industry and making people feel good. Spray tanning is SAFE and something I could easily make mobile. Being my own boss was also something I knew I needed to experience. Leaving the Salon was the perfect stepping stone towards this.
Besides being mobile, what sets The Sun Tan Van apart from other tanning businesses?
My whole business plan is to provide an “experience” for the client. Yes, I do spray tanning. But this is an organic spray tan, in a van, with rotating LED lighting, and great music. I really like to get to know my clients and make every appointment fun, quick and comfortable.
From whom/where do you get the most style inspiration?
Honestly, I’ve never been one to follow trends. I’m either light years ahead or years behind with my style. My style comes from how confident I’m feeling with myself. I tend to dabble in all sorts of fashion realms from boho to athletic.
Whats the coolest beauty/fashion advice you’ve been given recently?
Yes, all black is acceptable. I didn’t even own black till I started working at the salon.
Where are your favorite places to chill out in your city?
Boston is very seasonal. Summertime I’m down in the Seaport, Fall would be Lincoln in Southie on Sunday. I’m a huge foodie, so I love to check out the newest restaurants. Any place with a patio is a go-to.
We noticed numerous editorials and runway shows are not doing a lot of the sexy, bronzed look these past few seasons; have you noticed any new, popular tanning trends lately?
One thing I will always believe is that everyone looks better with a tan! I’ve noticed “contouring” has become a hot make up trend – something I’ve not been able to master.
What your hopes/future plans for the business?
My goals for The Sun Tan Van, are to in the next 3-4 years have multiple vans up and running to cover more territory. After that, I’d love to open a location and add other types of services (ie – blowdries). But for now, it’s one client at a time and just making sure I deliver a great service and create a brand for the company.
