The objective was to use discarded onionskins to tie-dye fabric that can then be used create a one-of-a-kind garment. Onionskins can be stored for months, so I collected the skins every time I used onions for cooking. Furthermore, I asked grocery stores to save the skin rubbish for me, rather than discard it. I was inspired from various patterns of kanoko shibori. Numerous two and a half inch squares of 100% silk dupioni were used to design the garment. Each square was dyed in onion dye I made. Some squares were dyed using a method similar to kanoko shibori and stitched shibori to create letters of the alphabet. These squares were then stitched together and placed across the front of the bustier to spell the word “onion.” The bra cup has the appearance of a whole onion. I used a twisted tie-dye technique using both thread and string that was cut from plastic shopping bags. Three pieces of this twisted dyed textile where then fashioned to each bra cup to create the appearance of an onion. Strap and hem accents were made from silk chiffon hand twisted dye to create the shaded colors.
