Holiday Fashion

December 17, 2009 at 01:28 PM

Usually, the main goal behind dressing for a holiday party…is looking fabulous and showing off your best assets. But, when it comes to socializing with colleagues and your boss, fabulous is great - sexy could be considered inappropriate (depending on your line of work).

If your holiday party is among friends then there is no need to stress.   Wear a dress you love and feel comfortable in, regardless of how short and revealing it is. But the office party requires sophisticated elegance.

Now, this doesn't mean sparkle and sequins need to be thrown out the window. Being noticed at the holiday party is definitely not a bad thing, but you want to make sure you are not being noticed for indecent exposure.  Satin, velvet and shimmering sequins are a holiday do. Just make sure your neck and hemlines are modest.

A velvet or satin one-shouldered dress would make the perfect holiday

party ensemble matched with a cashmere wrap. You can pair a sequined

blouse with a black mini skirt and a soft black cardigan.

To add extra shimmer to your typical office suit, wear a blazer with a sequined or rhinestone lapel. A black velvet jacket would also be great for the office and this could be worn over a cocktail dress for subtle sophistication.

Or, find a red jumper dress and pair it with a white button up blouse for a holiday party outfit that is fun and flirty.  You could also layer a red or deep green corset over your blouse, worn with a black a-line skirt, for an outfit that is fitted, but not too revealing.

Tights are big this season … but we're not talking about the tights that you're used to. Tights this winter have a personality that demands attention. So choose tights in intricate patterns, lace, sparkles or bright colors to give your sweet little dress some much-needed spice.

The holidays are also the perfect time for your silver heels, those black peep toes with the oversized bows or those shoes covered in sequins. The more shimmer, the better.

...Tis the season to spread holiday cheer in a great outfit!

Winter Sportswear

December 09, 2009 at 02:33 PM

This year, ski and snowboard fashions have taken on an energetic approach by adding an assortment of bright colors. And, a bonus - it looks like the skiers will have no reason to be jealous of the snowboarders this year because the ski fashion is stepping up to the trendy plate of snow fashion.

Slim fit designs, for both men and women snowboarders and skiers, are really popular this year and will be offered by many brand lines, possibly taking the place of the baggy, relaxed fit often seen in the past.

In the snowboarding world, the boards are filled with unique, graphic art this season.  In parallel, the clothing reflects this with brightly patterned jackets making a clear statement in this year's outerwear.

The shiny fabrics and bright colors of women's jackets will be spotted throughout the slopes this season, especially warm yellow and purple tones with hoods, and primary colors like red and blue with a high gloss finish.

Men's styles are equally eye-catching, with bold patterns like oversized checks, plaids and stripes.

The brave and adventurous woman should look for a pair of bright red fitted snow pants, if she wants to stand out and be in the latest style on the slopes.

Performance fit wool is another great material for the snow bunny and slope rider. It is said to regulate temperature, while feeling soft and fitting sleekly to your body.

Of course, black is always in, so if you find a fitted style you love in a dark color, don't hesitate to buy it. But try to add some color with your goggles or gloves to introduce personality to your outfit.

Waterproof denim is also making a new comeback with fashionable denim styles that are well prepared for the frosty mountains and available in slim fitted or loose styles.

On the green side, it seems that the use of sustainable materials in outerwear will be more prevalent this season than in the past. Top brands like Volcom and Rip Curl will be incorporating the use of recycled plastic bottles into their snow apparel. If that doesn't give incentive to hit the slopes, what does?

Aside from being dressed in the latest winter threads, don't forget to apply plenty of SPF, put on a pair of stylish goggles, and I personally think nothing completes an outfit better than a helmet. What can I say? Safety is sexy.

Fall/Winter Colors

December 02, 2009 at 02:47 PM

The Fall/Winter Season doesn't just mean setting your clocks back and bringing out your scarves and gloves – it also means an entire new palette of colors to introduce to your wardrobe.

At the top of the list you'll find the tried and true red as a must-have color for fall. From one-shoulder dresses to peep-toe heels, tote bags and corset belts – whether you go for a splash of red in your wardrobe or an entire scarlet red outfit, this color is bound to heat up your style this season.

Purple isn't just for royalty and rockstars this season. You can rock with this shade by wearing a bold accessory or find a fitted purple cocktail dress.  Purple can match with neutral black, bright yellow or fuchsia and looks great on any skin tone.

Complement a yellow shirtdress with a purple corset belt and some satin purple peep toes for date night. During the day you can wear the belt with a deep lilac cardigan with some boyfriend jeans and ballet flats.

Other fall colors showing up this season are burnt orange, honey yellow, deep teal, and warm olive – all colors that remind you of autumn leaves swirling in the chilly night air, and all colors that would be perfect paired with some leather leggings, a cropped jacket, your favorite black scarf and some bootie heels.

One fall color also happens to be quite delicious – crème brûlée is one of this season's neutral colors. It is a soft combination of gray, ivory and beige that goes together well with the bright and metallic shades.   In addition, it can transition to other seasons and pair easily with classic black.

To keep things exciting during the autumn months, metallics are appearing on the runways and in stores. In every style imaginable, from shimmering gowns to sparkling tank tops, silver, gold and bronze are everywhere. Pair metallic shades with fitted black pants or dark denim skinny jeans.

Versatile black and gray, regardless of current trends, remain sophisticated wardrobe staples. Clothes in these colors will be hot, timeless and match with virtually anything. Make sure to pick up a black or gray “boyfriend” blazer this season. Wear the blazer with a white tee shirt, some fitted distressed jeans and a pair of wedge heels for a look that is both casual and adventurous.

The great thing about seasonal color trends is that you can punch up your look with as little or as much of the trendy colors you choose. So, go for it! Celebrate the season!

Boots

November 25, 2009 at 09:20 AM

When the temperature drops, I know most of us are only thinking about one thing … boots. (At least, I am.) As one of the best fashion accessories for winter, this season it's time to find more than one pair that will totally convey your individuality.

The latest fashion trends in boots are sure to include the perfect pair that will add zest to your wardrobe and warmth to your body. The styles and possibilities are endless. In flat, stacked, platform or high heels, neutrals or bright colors, leather, suede or metallic: you’re sure to find a favorite.

This season, boots embellished with studs or buckles are perfect for giving your wardrobe just the right amount of distinguished attitude. If you really want to create a “tough girl” persona, go after boots with multiple buckles or covered in studs.

Ankle boots and booties are also very popular this season, and can go with jeans, skirts and leggings. To add a flirty feminine touch to the bootie, find a pair with peep toes, bows or ruffled embellishments.

Rain boots are fun and functional, but they've been hiding behind the limelight of more “stylish” boots far too long. Nowadays, there are plenty of styles and patterns to help you really show off your personality.  Find a pair with flowers, rainbows or plaids – whatever you love - and then build a rainy day outfit around them.

Even cowboy boots have made the list this winter. Look for a pair in a neutral tone to keep the look casual. For an overall relaxed feel, pair them with leggings and a tunic or a flowing cotton dress.

I’ve saved the best for last: over the knee boots. For those of you who think this just isn't your style, I'm encouraging you to take a walk on the wild side. Over the knee boots can be worn over skinny jeans, leggings, patterned tights or just paired with a mini skirt or shorts. Look for a black pair in supple suede or leather, with a wide cuff that can be worn turned down or pulled up. They’ll be warm, comfortable and fun…and, in black, they will pair with many pieces in your closet.

Now comes the real fun – showing them off!

Geometric Jewellery

November 18, 2009 at 12:49 PM

Math has never been a subject to excite me, and geometry isn’t a word that would normally fill me with joy. But, when geometric shapes are mentioned in jewelry, math takes on a whole new, fashionably fun meaning.

And, right now, jewelry is all about fun, flirty, big, bold, dramatic pieces in unusual shapes and bright colors.

Geometric jewelry would describe those pieces with geometric elements that are the most striking characteristic of the piece. For example, a ring with a large square stone would be considered a geometric piece because the square shape is a dominant feature of the ring.

Necklaces with large circles, squares or rectangles in multihued, extravagant shades or exotic materials are taking the place of dainty jewelry pieces of the past. Some of the sharp edges of the pieces may be slightly rounded or beveled for comfort; others are left crisp and sharp.

The UsTrendy store has some wonderful examples of the geometric jewelry trend, all expertly designed and handcrafted by talented jewelry designers and artisans.

A mirror brooch by Nektar de Stagni, intriguingly stacked and angled, would be the perfect way to incorporate a little geometric splash into your work or casual wear. Picture it on the lapel of a dark jacket, for a modern but elegant touch.

Reshl/Stone offers a tiled necklace that is adorned with square turquoise pieces clustered together and attached to a leather cord. It would be the perfect complement to a black cocktail dress or softly subdued sweater.  Another Reshl/Stone creation is the colorful Temple Door necklace, with large trapezoid shaped carnelian tiles accented with turquoise and lime green beads. This fun necklace would enhance any neutral toned ensemble, and it would go beautifully with spring/summer ice cream sherbet colors.

There is a stunning example of organic geometric jewelry by B.Dru Design. The Costa Rican wood and shell necklace is exquisitely crafted with multicolored wooden rectangular shapes, including ebony, that were hand carved in Costa Rica and assembled with shell and copper findings; it would be wonderful when matched to your fall colored blouses and jackets.

The picture red jasper pendant by Rock on 2 features a striking trapezoid-shaped pendant made of gorgeous picture red jasper, on a necklace made of dream agate and gray agate beads, with sterling silver rondelles, beads and clasp. This necklace would be a conversation-starter, whether worn with a business suit or your favorite jeans and sweater.

Other examples of fabulous geometric jewelry in the UsTrendy store are Chenna Collections’ five-inch long Janie earrings made of cascading fire agate spheres, or their Oku necklace made of sterling silver and rectangular fire agate tiles. And with its variety of hues, the Tutti Frutti necklace by Lua Lua is a triangular design marvel that would go with nearly everything in your wardrobe.

Who knew geometry could be this fun?
